What Formats Is ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Available In?

Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania deserves big-screen attention. Currently, the ant-sized blockbuster is available in several formats: IMAX, IMAX 3D, Screen X, 4DX, Superscreen / DOLBY, 3D, and standard. While these several options seem daunting, I’ll talk through one option which I thoroughly recommend: IMAX.

Whenever a new Marvel adventure hits the screen, I always opt for the IMAX option. Since 2014 Marvel & IMAX began a long-term agreement, whereby every film from then on would be optimized for IMAX viewing, meaning the best and most complete way to experience a Marvel film would be on an IMAX screen.

Marvel has since popularised “The IMAX Difference” that have become commonplace in many of today’s blockbusters, whereby an expanded ratio of 1:90 (i.e. a taller picture with more footage) is featured either in select scenes, or the entire film. This feature not only adds more picture to the scene but gives viewers an immersive experience by filling their field of view. The screen also comes paired with pin-point accurate sound and rumbling bass that shakes the auditorium.

This feature was present in Ant-Man’s previous outing, where the additional 26% of film was essential to see Ant-Man become his gargantuan form. While this ratio will not be present throughout the film’s duration, the IMAX trailers (showing the IMAX difference) promise an entire cohort of scenes will be present in the format. Watch the IMAX trailer below:

Whether or not you should opt for IMAX 3D is entirely up to your preference. As common for blockbusters nowadays, the film is converted into the 3D format rather than filmed in it. With Marvel, I personally always opt for IMAX 3D as I find the IMAX version of the format is more refined, but others do find the format distracting. There’ll be no difference in footage or sound between the two, but the film does tend to be brighter in non-3D formats.
